Simple record-keeping for a backyard poultry flock

A small notebook or spreadsheet can make everyday flock management more organised. Useful records do not need to be complicated; they need to be consistent.

Record the starting point

Write down when the birds arrived, where they came from and the number received. Add the type of stock and any information supplied at collection. This creates a useful reference when comparing later observations or asking the supplier questions.

Track regular inputs

Keep receipts and note feed purchases, bedding, equipment and other routine costs. Record approximate usage consistently so you can understand your operation more clearly. Separate one-off setup costs from recurring expenses when reviewing your budget.

Note changes in the flock

Record changes in bird numbers, breeding activity and other observations relevant to your goals. For health concerns, write down what you observed and when, then seek qualified advice. A record supports a clearer conversation but does not replace professional assessment.

Review before expanding

Look back at the time, space and costs involved before adding more birds. Consider whether your daily routine remains manageable and whether housing needs improvement. Records help you make a considered decision rather than expanding only because more stock is available.
